Hyde Mountain: Not for the Faint of Heart
by Glen Erickson
The breathtaking views at the Hyde Mountain Golf Course at Mara Lake have long been used as a backdrop for recreational golfers who choose to keep their cameras close by as they tee it up.
Located a few minutes from downtown Sicamous, B.C. in the provinces interior, the golf course has been a huge draw to a region that has long been known for the houseboat lifestyle. In fact, there is a complimentary dockside shuttle service from the 24-slip marina to the clubhouse and Logger’s Restaurant and Lounge at Hyde Mountain.
A day at the golf course will provide ample opportunity to immerse yourself in the lake and mountain vistas of the Shuswap region. Hyde Mountain would be a certain contender for the title of British Columbia's most scenic golf course. The jaw-dropping lake views, elevation changes, and lush turf conditions complement this championship layout.

The fourth hole is a drop of eye candy for everyone; that’s a 400-foot drop! It’s a time when many players will ask themselves if they are feeling lucky enough to go at it with a driver. Or, do you opt for a more conservative play? Shot placement is important at Hyde Mountain, the par 3’s provide a stout challenge, and the greens require a keen touch.
A mild winter through resulted in some early openings for golf courses throughout the interior of B.C., and Hyde Mountain is no exception. According to head professional Rick Thompson, the facility is slated to open for play on Saturday, March 27.
Travelers from the lower mainland and Alberta have flocked to the Shuswap region for years, thoroughly enjoying the recreational lifestyle the landscape exudes. And just recently, the collection of five golf courses in the area have begun to work together to promote the Shuswap as a golf destination. Hyde Mountain, which was nominated for the Best New Canadian Golf Course in 2003 by Golf Digest, has long been a centerpiece for golfers in-the-know. But today, the region boasts a group of five full-length, championship golf courses that as a group, can rival any collection of destination facilities one might find in many of western Canada’s urban settings. Indeed, the Shuswap golf region has arrived and the golfing public is the big winner!
